Painted Bunting

It was a close race, but only four birds could fly away with the coveted Egret. The Atlantic Puffin, Western Grebe, Hermit Thrush & Painted Bunting each won their respective categories in Audubon's Avian Awards. Isn't this a magnificent bird?  If you have had any sightings of a painted bunting, please let me know where you have seen it, I will try to get there as soon as I possibly can.  Thank you.

In the meantime, hummingbirds are buzzing outside my window and a goldfinch is a constant visitor.

I love birds and I love butterflies too, even one with an injured wing. (It could still fly, by the way, we should learn from it.)
Take care everyone, hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.
Look for beauty everywhere!

  4. If I saw a Painted Bunting you would hear the excited chatter all the way to Georgia. WHAT a gorgeous bird. All the more so because it's not a parrot or macaw or anything tropical.

I see goldfinches all the time on my bike rides - usually hanging around the thistles or the goldenrod. They are beautiful too - little flashes of yellow and black.

    Love your yellow daisy header!

    1. Ha! I have read that some people DO capture it and sell it as a caged bird in other countries which is illegal, of course! How could anyone want to cage a bird is beyond me. I want my birds to be FREE.
Goldfinches are so beautiful! That yellow with the black and white, gorgeous!
Speaking of gorgeous, the yellow daisies are fantastic this year, as they are every year! And you know Richard took that header shot!

  5. None of our European species are as colourful as that, Kay, although some have been dipped into the paint pot quite nicely as well, such as the blue tit, the goldfinch and greenfinch and thistle finch, or some of the woodpeckers and, of course, the jay.

You are right, beauty is so close at hand sometimes, and yet people have a tendency to overlook it in the everyday small things and only look for it in things they can buy.

    1. Oh, I love all birds and I have fond memories of the blue-tit in England! A dear little bird, which I know you love with all the blue and yellow!

  6. Love the Painted Bunting! The only thing I've ever seen quite that colourful are parrots and parrokeets in Australia. But now I might have to try Bunting Hunting.

  7. How very beautiful. When I first saw the pic of the Painted Bunting I thought it must be the result of photo editing. I would very much like to see one of these for real.

  8. That painted bunting is beautiful I don't think we have those around here at all but we do have butterflies galore and gold finches too. It's a beautiful time of year.

  10. The birds are strikingly beautiful, and i'm fascinated by the butterfly that could still fly when injured. The tenacity of life to hold on!

    1. I know and that is our largest butterfly in Georgia, the tiger swallowtail and it is our state butterfly! With most of the wing missing, we were surprised at how well it could fly!

    1. Oh yes, I knew what you meant! Richard and I saw an indigo bunting at Panola Mountain one time and we were so excited to see it, it was a very quick bird, and we saw it for only a few seconds!

  15. Saw a number of them when we went to Sapelo Island too.
They're strictly a spring time bird for us, don't know where they go after that.

  16. Oh my, if only I should be so lucky to see a painted bunting!!!! If I see one, I'll let you know!!! All of my usual birds are around although I haven't seen the hummingbirds in a week or so. I actually need to go fill up my feeders ~ the squirrels have cleaned them out yet again! Hope you have a good week!!!

    1. Our hummingbirds have been very busy feeding, we think they are getting ready to leave us! Just think of all the thousands of miles those little guys travel, amazing.

  17. Well there's certainly nothing subtle about the painted bunting. As Librarian said we don't have anything quite so gaudy in Europe. I would add the hoopoe to her list.

    1. Wow, Graham, I just looked it up, that hoopoe is amazing, I would love to see it one day!

Wishing you a happy week, too.

  20. I was just admiring the lovely colours of your latest header and then, WOW! What a stunning bird - it just doesn't look real - rainbow bird would be more appropriate! Your goldfinch is lovely too - much more golden than ours in the UK. x
