Knock On Wood

Do you ever knock on wood when someone states a very favorable observation?  I know that I do, I wonder is this done all over the world?   Let me know!

In my teenage years, it was very popular in Conyers to go roller skating and our local rink was Duvall's Skating Rink and Ken Duvall played the best music.  One of the songs was "Knock On Wood" and it was great to skate along with that one....when it got to the part of the song where the singer says, "Knock on wood"...as we were skating, we would raise one skate and bang it down on the wooden floor in time to those knocks!  It sounded really good with a large group of skaters!  It is a great song.  And you know I found it here for you!  The song was written by Steve Cropper (who I have written about before!) and Eddie Floyd, who is the singer of the song.  What a great voice! And I see that he is still performing and making music.  His latest album was released in 2013, "Down By The Sea", which is a good reason for me to have photo of the beach. (From Eastbourne, East Sussex in England.)

So tell me, do you knock on wood?  And does hearing a song sometimes bring back a memory so sharp and vivid that it startles you in its intensity?

  3. I often knock wood. I pass it off as humor but is it? As far as songs and memories a big oh yes. Music is one of my passions so I can connect many songs to memories both fond and not so fond.

  4. People here knock on wood, too, for "good luck". I don't do "luck" that much and therefore don't really knock on wood, just like I don't believe black cats mean bad luck etc. I have my own little customs though that, if people knew about them, would probably think I'm a bit weird ;-)
As for the song, I only knew Amii Stewart's version from 1979. Love the skating story! And yes, songs are just as much a time machine as are scents. I don't think you were reading my blog yet when I wrote this post in 2010:

  5. I know the song, although I cannot say that I think of it much, but I do knock on wood quite a bit - we say "touch wood" as we - yes, you guessed it! - touch the wood! Just another of those funny things we do hey! xx

  6. Good Song. My mum used to say 'touch wood' if she dropped something or said something... like a wish fulfillment but if no wood was available she'd tap her head and say 'Hairy wood is best' which always tickled me as it seemed to come directly from her childhood and she still remembered to do it even after dementia took away most of her other memories.
Now the main phrases I hear constantly are 'See you later' which every shop assistant seems to utter these days when you leave and is about as genuine as 'Tell me about it' which means the exact opposite of the words.

  7. Kay, I never got to go skating...on in the street by my house, when the neighbor lady gave us her skates.. But I have always loved that old song. Don't you remember when people would say"better knock on wood" they would rap their own heads. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
p.s. hope you are warm..we are freezing up here in Indy.

  8. Oh yes, I knock on wood all the time to keep the devil away, lol! And if there's no wood nearby, just knock on your head -- do you do that too? I love old superstitions and other cultural remnants of magical thinking.

  9. I knock on wood here too. Funny how some habits become a way of life like that.

  12. Knock on wood is what we do when we say that something, usually a negative something, hasn't happened yet. It's supposed to date back to an old Druid custom of tapping on an oak tree to get the tree spirit's attention, or something like that. It's been years since i read an explanation about it.

  15. Yes, I do knock on wood ~ often my head like Yaya above. And yes, songs evoke powerful memories for me ~ especially connected with a broken heart, mine, or those I broke. I know I've heard this song before, but I can't remember when or where. I love the picture of you all banging your roller-skates on the wooden floor. What fun!
